Teaching Advanced Helicopter Skills
Advanced Instructor Training is designed for qualified, experienced instructors progressing beyond foundation flight instruction into the teaching and supervision of complex helicopter skills.
HAFT develops instructors who can break advanced manoeuvres into clear instructional components, explain the underlying aerodynamic and operational principles, identify developing errors and adapt instruction to the individual pilot.
The instructor must remain ahead of both the student and the aircraft while maintaining sufficient capacity to monitor performance, assess risk and intervene when required. The objective is not simply to demonstrate an advanced technique, but to understand it well enough to teach it safely and effectively.
Safe Supervision
and Standardisation
Advanced instruction requires sound judgement, particularly when teaching emergency procedures, confined-area operations, mountain techniques and other demanding exercises. Instructors must recognise when a student’s performance is deteriorating and intervene before the aircraft moves beyond a safe recovery margin.
Training can address advanced aircraft handling, emergency instruction, turbine operations, scenario-based training, instructional risk management, competency assessment and intervention techniques.
HAFT also supports instructor standardisation by establishing common procedures, terminology and assessment criteria. This helps client organisations maintain consistent instructional standards, reliable competency assessment and continuity across their training systems.

Instructor development enables aviation organisations to retain and transfer knowledge internally. Qualified instructors can develop future pilots, mentor junior instructors, maintain operating standards and support recurrent training within their own organisations.
Programmes can be structured around the client’s aircraft, instructor population, operating environment and defined training responsibilities. Development may extend from advanced technical instruction into standardisation, instructor supervision and broader training leadership.
The long-term objective is to reduce dependence on external training support by strengthening the organisation’s ability to develop, assess and sustain its own personnel. A capable instructor does not develop one pilot. A capable instructor strengthens successive generations of aviators.
