Extending the Operational Reach of the Helicopter
Sling load capability enables helicopters to transport equipment and supplies where terrain, obstacles, limited infrastructure or the absence of a suitable landing area prevents conventional delivery.
For defence, security and government aviation organisations, external-load operations can support remote logistics, disaster response, infrastructure support and the movement of specialist equipment into otherwise inaccessible locations.

Sling load operations demand accurate aircraft control while the pilot manages power, performance, wind, terrain, obstacles and the behaviour of the external load.
Training develops stable hover and positioning techniques, departure and approach procedures, load control, external-load aerodynamics and emergency considerations. Pilots learn how sling length, load weight, shape and aerodynamic characteristics can affect load stability and aircraft performance.
The programme connects practical flying with a clear understanding of the principles involved. Pilots must be able to anticipate load behaviour, recognise developing instability and operate within the limitations of the aircraft, equipment, crew and environment.

Effective sling load operations depend on coordinated action between the pilot, supporting crew, ground personnel, equipment and load. Each element forms part of a single operational system.
Training reinforces defined responsibilities, load preparation, standardised signals, clear communication and coordinated aircraft positioning. Depending on the client’s intended application, the programme can also incorporate mission planning, fuel and performance calculations, environmental assessment, contingency procedures and Threat and Error Management.
Sling Load training may be combined with mountain flying, confined-area operations, remote-area flying and other advanced capabilities. This allows external-load competence to become part of a broader operating capability rather than remaining an isolated flying technique.
