Air Rescue
Reaching and recovering people where helicopters cannot land.
Rescue Where Conventional Access Is Limited
Mountainous terrain, flooding, damaged infrastructure and confined environments can prevent a helicopter from landing where assistance is required. Air Rescue develops the specialised aviation capability needed to reach and recover people in these conditions.
Through HAFT’s connection to ROCKET Air Rescue, operated by Henley Air, training is informed by an active helicopter rescue environment. Crews develop the precision flying, planning and operational judgement required to position the aircraft safely where terrain, obstacles and environmental conditions limit conventional access.
The objective extends beyond executing a rescue technique. It is to develop coordinated crews capable of using the helicopter to provide access where surface or conventional aviation options are unavailable.
Human External
Cargo Operations
Human External Cargo, or HEC, provides a specialised means of reaching, positioning or recovering people where a helicopter landing is impossible or impractical. Because a person is carried externally to the aircraft, HEC requires exceptional precision, standardisation and risk management.
Training can include precision hover control, aircraft positioning, site and obstacle assessment, wind evaluation, power and performance management, approach and departure planning, equipment limitations and emergency considerations.
Pilots must maintain accurate aircraft control while monitoring conditions around the helicopter and the activity beneath it. Every decision must account for the aircraft, rescue equipment, operating environment and the person being recovered. In HEC operations, precision is both a technical requirement and a direct responsibility to the person beneath the aircraft.
Integrating the
Rescue Crew
Air Rescue depends on the coordinated performance of the complete rescue system. The pilot controls the aircraft, while rescue personnel manage equipment, assess the operating site, monitor obstacles and communicate positioning information that may not be directly visible from the cockpit.
Training reinforces defined responsibilities, standardised communication, Crew Resource Management, Threat and Error Management and shared situational awareness. Crews also address mission planning, aircraft performance, fuel, weather, terrain, contingencies and the condition of the person requiring assistance.
The wider rescue sequence may extend from locating and accessing a casualty through recovery, stabilisation and evacuation:
Locate → Access → Recover → Stabilise → Evacuate
The aircraft provides access, the pilot provides precision and the rescue crew provides the connection. Together, these elements create an integrated rescue capability for remote, inaccessible and disaster-affected environments.
