Private Pilot Licence Helicopter (PPL(H))

Structured Foundation Training
The Private Pilot Licence (Helicopter), or PPL(H), is the first formal stage in HAFT’s ab initio cadet-development pathway. For an organisational cadet, this phase extends beyond meeting the requirements of a licence. It establishes the flying disciplines, technical understanding and professional behaviours upon which all subsequent training depends.
Flying exercises, theoretical instruction, pre-flight preparation, briefings, debriefings and individual study are integrated into a structured development process. Each new exercise builds on competencies already established, with progression based on demonstrated ability and understanding rather than flight hours alone.
Cadets are expected to understand what they are doing, why each procedure is required and how their inputs affect the helicopter. This method develops a disciplined approach to learning and provides a consistent foundation for progression into more complex aircraft, procedures and operating environments.
Understanding
the Helicopter
Helicopter competence requires more than the ability to manipulate the flight controls. Cadets must understand the relationship between aerodynamics, aircraft systems, power, performance and the operating environment.
PPL(H) training progressively develops knowledge across principles of flight, aircraft technical systems, meteorology, navigation, human performance, aviation law, flight planning and operational procedures. Instructors connect this theoretical content directly to the cadet’s experience in the aircraft, ensuring that technical knowledge supports practical decision-making.
The objective is to develop pilots who can interpret aircraft behaviour, recognise changing conditions, understand performance limitations and apply technical knowledge when circumstances differ from a familiar training exercise. This understanding becomes increasingly important as cadets progress towards turbine, instrument, multi-engine and operational helicopter platforms.
Developing
Professional Airmanship
Technical handling is only one component of professional helicopter flying. From the first flight, HAFT introduces the disciplines required for safe and accountable aviation operations.
Training develops thorough preparation, checklist discipline, radio communication, traffic awareness, situational awareness and respect for aircraft and personal limitations. Cadets are also introduced to Threat and Error Management, operational risk awareness and structured decision-making.
HAFT’s training environment at Rand Airport exposes cadets to active airspace, crossing runways and a varied mix of helicopter and fixed-wing traffic. This requires disciplined communication, traffic management and sound judgement from an early stage.
The competencies established during the PPL(H) provide the foundation for Commercial Pilot Licence, Night Rating, Instrument Rating, turbine, multi-crew and mission-specific training. The purpose is not simply to teach a cadet to fly a helicopter, but to begin developing the professional aviator the client organisation will require.
