Night Vision Goggle Training (NVG)

Integrating NVG into Helicopter Operations
Night Vision Goggles enhance visual information where unaided references are severely limited, extending the operational potential of appropriately equipped helicopters and trained crews. NVG training, however, involves more than learning to fly while wearing the equipment.
HAFT develops the aircraft handling, procedural discipline and operational judgement required to integrate NVG technology into the mission environment. Training addresses approaches, departures, navigation, terrain awareness and confined-area considerations under varying lighting and environmental conditions.
The objective is to develop pilots who can use NVG effectively while maintaining aircraft control, situational awareness and appropriate operational margins throughout the mission.
Understanding the
Technology and Its Limitations
NVG enhances night vision but does not reproduce daylight conditions. The equipment introduces restrictions affecting field of view, visual acuity, depth perception and peripheral vision. Weather, terrain, cultural lighting and environmental conditions can further influence image quality.
Pilots learn to interpret the NVG image, transition between aided and unaided references, and recognise degraded visual conditions. Training also develops an understanding of aircraft compatibility, equipment limitations, cockpit lighting and the factors that can reduce the effectiveness of night vision systems.
Competence includes recognising when available visual information is no longer sufficient and when conditions are approaching the limits of the aircraft, equipment or crew.
Developing the NVG Crew and Organisational Capability
Effective NVG operations rely on coordinated crews, not individual pilot competence alone. HAFT places emphasis on communication, task sharing, workload management, Threat and Error Management, abnormal procedures and shared situational awareness.
Training can be aligned with defence, security, emergency response, search and rescue, medical evacuation, surveillance and remote-area operating requirements. Where required, development can extend beyond initial qualification into recurrent training, crew development, instructor capability and mission-specific application.
Sustainable NVG capability also depends on suitable aircraft, approved equipment, operating procedures, training standards and organisational oversight. HAFT can position NVG training within a structured pathway that enables operators to develop, maintain and progressively sustain night capability internally
