Aviation Support Where Access Is Limited
Aerial Security and Remote Operations prepares helicopter crews to work across large conservation areas, remote terrain, border regions and locations with limited surface access or aviation infrastructure.
HAFT develops advanced aircraft handling, terrain awareness, low-level navigation, aerial observation and accurate positioning in relation to a defined area or point of interest. Training draws on established conservation and specialised helicopter flying disciplines developed within Southern Africa.
The objective is to integrate the aircraft, crew and operational requirement effectively. The helicopter becomes an aerial support platform capable of providing mobility, access and situational awareness where conventional ground-based operations may be restricted.
Aerial Observation
and Remote-Area Operations
Helicopters provide the ability to cover extensive areas rapidly, reposition as circumstances change and observe terrain that may be difficult to assess from the ground. Training develops the handling and crew-coordination skills required to use that capability effectively.
Depending on the client’s requirements, training can include aerial search and observation techniques, orbiting and manoeuvring around a point of interest, remote-area navigation, terrain and obstacle assessment, confined or non-standard landing sites, wind evaluation, power management and operational fuel planning.
These competencies may support conservation, anti-poaching activities, area monitoring, border-area support, disaster assessment, infrastructure monitoring and other remote operational requirements. The emphasis remains on accurate aircraft control, disciplined observation and sound judgement within the limitations of the aircraft, crew and environment.
Integrating Air
and Ground Teams
Effective aerial security and remote operations depend on coordinated action between pilots, observers, supporting crew and personnel on the ground. Each participant may hold information required for the safe and effective conduct of the operation.
Training reinforces clear responsibilities, standardised communication, shared situational awareness, Crew Resource Management and Threat and Error Management. Crews learn to position the aircraft in support of the ground requirement while managing terrain, obstacles, aircraft performance, workload and changing operational conditions.
Where required, programmes can also incorporate rapid personnel deployment, remote-site access and the aviation component of rope-access deployment techniques. The purpose is to develop an integrated air-ground capability that combines helicopter mobility with effective operational coordination.
